Perceived Perfection

dear mama, I promise, this one thing will destroy your home

the one thing guaranteed to end all marriages

It’s national daughters day?! How did I not know

It’s national daughters day?! How did I not know? Oh what an amazing day to celebrate! Never in a million years would I have imagined I would have the honor of raising not only one daughter but THREE lovely daughters? (And if you’re count Willow bug that makes four! 🐶) My girls are the apples of my eye and I cannot begin to explain how humbled I am to serve and mother them.⁣
⁣
Just this past week, though, I was walking another mama through how to grieve with someone who has just lost a baby. I had trouble getting the words out as my throat was closing up. I can’t ever take a mama “there” unless I allow myself to go back to those places where my heart felt like it was being ripped out. I have to allow myself to feel again what our losses were in order to give sound advice or counsel to others.⁣
⁣
And I’ll say this...there are some pains too deep to express with any amount of words...and some joys too rich to be able to express. And often times they go hand in hand, simultaneously, like two pedals on a bike.⁣
⁣
If you neglect one, the other might not work properly. Grief and sorrow, joy and celebration are both necessary for the human heart to carryon. ⁣
⁣
If you’re a mama celebrating today the daughters you hold, raise and parent I celebrate with you. It’s an absolute miracle any of us have been given the undeserved privilege to raise these precious souls. Let’s not ever take for granted what we have been gifted. ⁣
⁣
If you’re a mama grieving today, either a baby lost, a child no longer, or a baby longed for I grieve with you. There is nothing apart from the love of Jesus that can quench the pain of an empty womb or empty arms.⁣
⁣
For all the mamas, and mamas yet to be...while I do want to give honor to this day and what it represents, I also want to remind you of #thematteringthings in that we need to always find our true hope, our true joy and our true identities not in motherhood but in Christ. He alone satisfies the desires of our hearts. Let’s make sure to worship the Giver, not just the gifts He is so gracious to give. The Lord gives and the Lord takes...𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗗 be HIS NAME!

A few years back Matt was given a book written by

A few years back Matt was given a book written by a pastor for pastors. Never before has he been so moved by another writer. He was so deeply impacted by the authors heart that he contacted the man to ask if he could speak with him. That phone call turned into a friendship, one that continues to breathe life into my husband as he continues to serve the church today.⁣
⁣
My husband knows me well and knew I’d love it too, and while it is intended for pastors and those in ministry I found it extremely helpful and beneficial for my life as a mother. Its on my top 5 favorite books I’ve ever read.⁣
⁣
Since then, Matt has continued to recommend and gift this book to friends, family members and fellow pastors. Even the other leaders at our local church have built and developed foundational markers and identities for our staff and people based off this book. ⁣
⁣
One of the main phrases Matt and I love, and you may remember from some of my older posts, is the idea the “mattering things” in life. The mattering things are to love God and love others and most often requires us to continue being faithful in “mostly overlooked places over long periods of time.” ⁣
⁣
It is in the ordinary, great things happen. ⁣
⁣
“Jesus made a habit of giving his time to unknown, broken people in out of the way places, overlooked by the world, but known and delighted in by Him.” -Zack Eswine ⁣
⁣
Moving forward for me here online, I want this to be clear. While I did not come up with the term “the mattering things” it is going to be how I will continue to describe what I’m all about here in these little spaces. I will still talk about motherhood, and yes I do love fitness and I’m all about having a conversation about the latest trends in lashes, but all of those things will fit under this umbrella of keeping first things first…and chasing, living for, encouraging you in and resting in the mattering things of life. ⁣

Hi, I’m Meg. I’m always going to be a work in progress, but I want my life to be about what matters most. Will you join me in pursuing #thematteringthings?

This sweet boys’ first football game was tonight

This sweet boys’ first football game was tonight. I couldn’t be there to watch and was so sad. But...we still don’t have a car that fits our entire family and the game was over an hour away...so the girls did some shopping while the boys went to the game. ⁣
⁣
Sweet Kai has worked really hard these past few weeks to train and I couldn’t be more proud. He even got to play tonight! Sadly, they lost, but he came home with a huge smile on his face. ⁣
⁣
Never did I think I’d ever be a football mama! But hey!!! When in Texas...🏈 Go Lions! ⁣
⁣
P.S. I love the way he looks at her by the way...melts my heart. ⁣
Tomorrow we are back at building our pool deck...tell me (it’s taking FOREVER!!! 😖 but it’s going to be incredible!) what are you all up to this weekend??

Never in a million years would I have dreamed of t

Never in a million years would I have dreamed of taking my SEVEN kiddos back to my college campus! Last week we traveled to Oklahoma (rented a huge 15 passenger van!) for Matt’s grandfathers funeral. ⁣
⁣
On the way back we made some stops to see some family and friends and visit OU! I showed them the stadium, the library, the beautiful campus and my sorority house! We walked in and a few girls were on the lower floor eating and hanging out...and suddenly ALL the memories came flooding back! It was beyond wild to be there with my huge family! ⁣
⁣
If you’re in need of the reminder today...let me assure you that sometimes the plans we make for ourselves absolutely pale in comparison to the ones God has for us. When I attended OU I was dating someone else I was convinced I wanted to marry...and being back there brought back to the surface so many old memories and feelings...but now when I look back from this perspective, walking the same paths with my family, I am SO encouraged that God knew exactly what He was doing in allowing my heart to be broken all those years ago. ⁣
⁣
Maybe...just maybe...today’s struggles truly are for a greater good you just cannot fathom today but will make absolute sense in years to come. ✨ #myfacethough😂

Over the past few months I have to admit the time

Over the past few months I have to admit the time away from all things media was good for my heart. It’s so easy to scroll through dozens of picture perfect everything and get lost in all the amazingness. I’d then look at my piles of laundry, my ongoing to do list, or my untidy home and think only of how dissatisfied I was in my own life. ⁣
⁣
What I have realized is that the time I waste scrolling through feeds is time I could instead spend investing in my family. The few minutes I take to envy someone else’s life could have been time pouring into the lives of those in my home. ⁣
⁣
Comparing our lives to others isn’t a new topic. Years ago we didn’t have the ability to peer into someone else’s life or home the way we do now. And it’s created some angst in us when we look around and become dissatisfied.⁣
⁣
The great lie is that we would be happier with other people, living elsewhere, with other stuff. But it is just that. A huge lie.⁣
⁣
Is there a need for some extra attention in your marriage? Is there a need for an extra hug for one of your kids? Is there a room you could brighten or a moment to just enjoy. Sorting through that pile of laundry really could be something to enjoy when you share the load with those you love. Are the moments with your family worthy of living even if it isn’t going to be photographed and shared? ⁣Oh my goodness yes!!!!
⁣
So to all my friends out there who may have just had one of 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 days (🙋🏼‍♀️) and are now scrolling just to check out and find some relief from your crazy life, please let me just encourage you and me both with one more reminder our homes are a blessing, our families are a gift and right where we are at is not only worth investing in, but celebrating. ✨

Football practice, ballet practice, meals, errands

Football practice, ballet practice, meals, errands, shopping for school supplies, prepping to homeschool, chasing chickens, painting an old antique cabinet, feeding babies, wrangling toddlers, dance parties in the kitchen, running out back to help build a deck...⁣

Trying to get all the faces looking at the camera

Trying to get all the faces looking at the camera with HAPPY smiles is like trying to nail jello to the wall! ⁣
⁣
Last week I had a plan for all things regarding school. It was set and I knew what we were doing. But then I learned a few more things about this “plan” of mine and I suddenly realized it wasn’t going to work at all as I had hoped or imagined. ⁣
⁣
The past few days we haven shaken it all up again like a huge snow globe and have decided to go a completely different route. And it’s one I am actually SUPER excited about!!!⁣
⁣
We will be fully homeschooling on our own without any distance learning from the public schools and while I feel as if I’ve gone off the high dive (which I HATED as a kid!) I also feel hopeful like this really could work for this season.⁣
⁣
I would never have imagined me taking this route but sometimes the Lord just opens doors and shoves us through! ⁣
⁣
We are delaying our start date until Thursday so I can get a few more things set in place but tell me how things are going so far for you all! ⁣
⁣

I’ve been putting a list together of my top favorite “lessons learned” through this very long time away from social media. ⁣
⁣
On the top of that list is learning even more so to truly value the faces right in front of me before the faces on my phone. I have loved taking photos in my mind and making memories in my heart simply because they are precious. The family we have is worth investing in regardless of whether or not others are watching. ⁣
⁣
What I am also learning is itdoesn’t mean there cannot be both. The phone and the people I love to interact with are not evil. To enjoy and those gifts isn’t wrong, in fact, it’s a blessing I am so incredibly thankful for.⁣
⁣
But when I look at these precious faces as means to a greater end I’ve completely missed the mark. ⁣
⁣
As I begin to dip my toes into sharing our lives over these mediums again I am continually and constantly moved to encourage you and I both to prioritize our hands, hearts and souls to serve first in our homes and with our people...and to allow all else to flow from there. ⁣
⁣
I know we aren’t the only family here with a new fall schedule that might feel intimidating. I’m sure we aren’t the only ones that don’t feel prepared to take on what’s just around the corner. So if I can help speak to my own heart as I also hope to encourage yours—let’s continue to learn to love this legacy we are building right here at our very own kitchen table. Pouring into little lives right in front of us will always be worth our time.⁣
